January

Linda Nguyen received the Australian Cerebral Palsy Alliance Conference Grant, an award that allowed her to attend the European Academy of Childhood Disability (EACD) Conference and present her research on the experiences of siblings with a brother or sister with a disability who are preparing for health care transition.
The CanChild team gathered on January 23, 2020, to celebrate the awarding of the John and Margaret Lillie Chair in Childhood Disability Research to Dr. Wenonah Campbell. The celebration also honoured the former holders of the Chair, Dr. Cheryl Missiuna and Dr. Mary Law.

Dr. Andrea Cross, Dr. Jan Willem Gorter, Dr. Peter Rosenbaum, Julia Hanes, Danijela Grahovac & Vasilije presented during the Ontario Brain Institute Public Talk about the F-Words: Finding the Ability in Disability
The Concussion team hosted the Concussion Experience Exhibition at various sports events in the cities of Oakville, Burlington, and Hamilton.
Dr. Dana Anaby and team received the Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR) Grant to examine whether engaging in a self-chosen activity in the community can lead to improvements in the motor, cognitive, and affective body functions of children with disabilities.

The CanChild team transitioned to working from home and other research activities were conducted remotely.
Launch of the Dutch version of Developmental Coordination Disorder online workshop.

April

Peter Rosenbaum discussed the F-Words for Child Development as part of the Caring During COVID campaign of McMaster Children’s Hospital.
Developmental Medicine & Child Neurology (DMCN) released a podcast featuring Dr. Peter Rosenbaum and his editorial, “You have textbooks, we have story books: disability as perceived by professionals and parents.”

May

Launch of #MyCOVIDDisabilityQ Twitter Campaign, an online space for Canadian children and youth with disabilities, as well as family members speaking on their behalf, to ask questions that relate to both their disabilities and the COVID-19 outbreak.
Andrea Cross received the CIHR Fellowship: Patient-Oriented Research Awards – Transition to Leadership Stream – Phase 1 as a Post Doctoral Fellow.
Linda Nguyen received the CIHR Fellowship: Patient-Oriented Research Award as a Doctoral student and the Mitacs Globalink Research Award.
Michelle Phoenix published an article in The Conversation about the impacts of COVID-19 to children with disabilities.
The Networks of Centres of Excellence Program renewed the Kids Brain Health Network (KBHN) for three more years, resulting in KBHN’s continued support the Family Engagement in Research (FER) Certificate of Completion Program run by CanChild.

June

As part of the efforts to improve equity, inclusion, and diversity, CanChild developed strategies to increase the representation of different populations across our online channels.

July

Redesigned the F-Words for Child Development logo to highlight the importance and relevance of the ‘F-Words’ for all children.

August

Celebrated the birthday and memory of Luke Martens by encouraging the online community to post a photo with Luke’s favourite dessert, ice cream, using the hashtag #IceCreamForLuke or to donate to a children’s hospital of their choice.
Launch of the short video series featuring nonverbal people and their families, with the hope to inspire everyone with their stories and change the social stigma around nonverbal people.

September

Dr. Olaf Kraus de Camargo, Dr. Kinga Pozniak, Dr. Matt Freeman, and Dr. Farah Ahmad shared the preliminary results of their study about COVID-19 supports for people with disabilities and caregivers.
Dr. Jan Willem Gorter presented at the Lunch & Learn Seminars and Instructional Courses session of the American Academy for Cerebral Palsy and Developmental Medicine (AACPDM) 74th Annual Meeting.

October

Dr. Peter Rosenbaum published an op-ed piece in The Hamilton Spectator, where he shared the important factors that contribute to the improvement of children’s health during the pandemic.
Canadian Institutes of Health Research -IHDCYH featured C-BiLLT, a computer program used to assess the language comprehension levels of non-verbal children. The article, written by Jael Bootsma, highlights how the tool can also help in setting therapy goals that reflect the skills of the children.

Revenue

CanChild revenue is driven by a number of different streams, including licensing of our products for clinical practice, research, and clinical trial contracts with pharmaceutical companies. CanChild also offers services to support and guide clinical practice and disability policy, including in-person and online training workshops, consultation services with provincial ministries and program evaluation through the Measurement and Analysis Service.

Sales from the CanChild Shop were strong throughout the year, despite the uncertainty of the pandemic. In addition, CanChild continued to grow its notoriety throughout the world, which is exemplified by the growth in interest in consultation and clinical trial contracts. In the 2020 Year, CanChild grossed approximately $450,000 in revenue. Projections for next year are positive, as we expect this growth trend to continue.
